Two-hour guided tour of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples: the review
My verdict: Of all six, this is the only one that truly changes what you take away from the experience, and I'm not just saying that to sell it. In a museum with 125 rooms and few labels, where the list of what's open changes every few weeks, two hours with someone who chooses what to look at is worth the money. Two things you would have preferred to know beforehand: if the group is large and there are no radio guides, you won't hear anything, and closed rooms remain closed even with a guide.
Why twenty-two euros above the box office price can be worth it
From €42 at the time of writing, compared to the €20 for a ticket at the box office: the difference pays for two hours with a person who talks. On the rest of the site, I'm the first to tell you to save money, so listen to me when I say the opposite. This museum is difficult to visit alone: 125 rooms, about 18,000 works on display, very few labels, and a route that, from 2025, starts from a different entrance. Someone who enters without a plan will see three hundred things perfectly well and remember four. A guide doesn't add objects: they remove, they organise, and what remains is a visit instead of a walk. All guided tours at MANN, including the museum's official one.
The rating is 4.8 out of 605 reviews, and it's the highest on the site with a sample large enough to mean something. A detail that says more than the average: in the reviews, the guides are mentioned by name — Nicoletta, Francesca, Federica, Silvia De Simone, Laura, Daniela, Carlo. When people thank someone by name, usually that someone has done their job well.
The complaint about the audio, and why the museum agrees with those who make it
This is the main honest note, and it's verbatim: "Our guide was very kind, but there was no audio, which was annoying because the place is very crowded." It's not nitpicking: the museum's regulations require radio guides with earphones for groups over 14 people, excluding schools. If the group is large and there are no earphones, half the group watches the guide move and hears the other groups. Ask beforehand how many people are expected and if radio guides are included: it's a two-line question that saves you two hours of irritation.
Closed rooms remain closed
The other review to read before paying says this: "Some rooms in the museum were closed and this was not good." They're right, and it's not the guide's fault. In the window published by the museum for August 7 – September 21, 2026, the Epigraphic Collection is closed, the Farnese Statuary is only guaranteed in rooms 1-7 and 25-29, the Farnese Gems are only open on Saturdays and Sundays, and the Mosaics collection closes from September 16 to November 30. The museum adds the clause that no one reads: such a closure "cannot lead to a refund of an already purchased ticket."
